Wheeeee! The "floppy" one-shot EMPOWERED: NINE BEERS WITH NINJETTE, the latest installment of my ongoing "sexy superhero comedy" series published by Dark Horse Comics, is on sale at your Local (well, North American) Comics Retailer as of today! Feel free to use this journal's comments if'n you wanna weigh in on the book, needless to say!
If your local store didn't stock it, the book can be ordered online from Dark Horse's retail website here: www.tfaw.com/Profile/Empowered… Or, if you like your comics in digital form (and in a form that actually contributes to the series' ongoing survival, as opposed to a frickin' torrent), you can snag the one-shot right now from the Dark Horse Digital Store: digital.darkhorse.com/profile/…
The main story in NINE BEERS WITH NINJETTE features beautiful artwork by guest artist Takeshi Miyazawa, best known in the US for his Marvel work on Spider-Man Loves Mary Jane and Runaways, as well as his long-ago debut on the Oni Press superhero-school series Sidekicks. More recently, he's drawn honest-to-Gawd manga in Japan, such as the Capcom game-tie-in series Lost Planet: Bound Raven; I felt both lucky and honored to have such an excellent artist contributing to the EMPOWERED franchise.
Say, here's the solicitation copy for the book (whose story was originally conceived of as part of the Ninjette-centric EMPOWERED vol.7):
Kick back and have a cold one with hearty-partying Ninjette, Empowered's Best Friend Forever, as she weaves a boozy yet poignant tale of ninja magic, complete with fighting, flirting, and swing-dancing with the Maidman—not to mention the outwitting of 'Jette's monstrous thug of a father. Drink up!
For the record, I wrote the main story and drew a 4-page prologue dealie introducing it; also, the issue also features a preview of the upcoming EMPOWERED vol.8, due out Dec.18. More details on that puppy here: www.darkhorse.com/Books/19-253…
In closing, I must of course paste in the requisite general-purpose Emp-related floggery: Print copies of Empowered's first seven volumes (and numerous one-shots in comics format) can be found on the shelves of your Local Comics Retailer or bookstore, or online at Dark Horse's retail website www.tfaw.com/Search?_results_u… or on Amazon.com www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_nos… .
All the existing Empowered books can be purchased rather more cheaply in digital form as well, via the Dark Horse Digital store: digital.darkhorse.com/search/?…

See you at Baltimore Comic-Con, October 18-20!
Once again, I'm headed down to Maryland this weekend for Baltimore Comic-Con, my final convention of the year. Had a great time at the show in 2018, so a repeat visit seemed like a fine way to wrap up 2019's con season.
I'll be set up at the Hero Initiative booth (#2205) for all three days of the convention, raising some bucks for that fine charity (which helps comics creators in need) while attending to all your signing and sketching (and commissioning?) needs. I'll also bring along a fair bit of original artwork, plus some recently unearthed copies of older works, and maybe a copy or two of Empowered vol.11. Drop by and say hi if you're at
See you at Heroes Con, June 14-16!
Once again, I'll be journeying to Heroes Con in Charlotte this weekend (I do love that show), where I'll be set up at Artist Alley table AA-1817 for all your signing, sketching, commissioning and/or original-art-buying needs! (Plus I'll have a bunch of comics on sale, including a batch of recently unearthed Dirty Pair: Sim Hell and Bubblegum Crisis: Grand Mal issues.) Drop by and say hi, won't you?
Seee you at Phoenix Fan Fusion, May 23-26!
Courtesy of the fine folks at the Hero Initiative charity, I'll be flying out to attend the Phoenix Fan Fusion show this weekend. Never been to Arizona in my whole goshdarned life, so this should be a novel experience! I'll be set up at the Hero Initiative booth (#396) for all your signing and sketching needs; donations to Hero, which supports comics creators in need, would be much appreciated. If you happen to be attending, drop on by and say hi, won't you?
See you at Emerald City Comic-Con, March 14-17!
Once again, I'll be tabling in Artist Alley at the ol' Emerald City Comic-Con, March 14-17. I'll be set up at table Y-7 all convention long for all your signing, sketching, and original-art-perusing needs, along with a fair amount of Empowered backstock in case you're missing any volumes or "floppy" issues. (Might even be bringing some old Dirty Pair issues and Bubblegum Crisis: Grand Mal posters, if you're feeling nostalgic.)
Thursday, March 14, I'm on the Dark Horse panel "Artists Who Write: The Craft and Creation of Comics," from 12:15pm-1:15pm in room TCC L3-R3. Then, later in the day, I'll be signing at the Dark Horse Comics booth (#220

I'm always gonna be highly biased in favor of Mr. Warren's art style when it comes to Empowered. That being said, I really enjoyed Takeshi Miyazawa's work on this one off story, and would love to see more of it in the EMP-verse if the opportunity ever comes along. Great stuff.
More bits and pieces of Ninjette's background are coming into focus. Oyuki continues to puzzle me. Did this intense resentment towards Ninjette start when she used that ninja scroll on Oyuki, or has she been lying to Ninjette all along? Did she develop some kind of loyalty to her clan in the interval between that scroll use and the night Ninjette ran away? Or does she still hate the clan and Ninjette along with it. One of the harder characters to understand.
The comic also includes a neat preview of the next big volume. All I'll say is that Sistah Spooky's expression in that last panel reminds me of this:
