EMPOWERED 7's arm-wrestling Ninjette and Emp by AdamWarren EMPOWERED 7's arm-wrestling Ninjette and Emp by AdamWarren
Behold, two pages (pp. 174-175, to be precise) from the upcoming Empowered vol. 7, the latest installment of my ongoing "sexy superhero comedy" series published by Dark Horse Comics. The book's slated to hit the shelves of your Local Comics Store on May 30th, and arrive in conventional bookstores some time after that. More info here: [link]

Anyhoo, this seemingly innocuous scene of superstrong Empowered and non-superstrong Ninjette arm-wrestling winds up being surprisingly important, believe it or not, once Ninjette's point is made clear in the pages that follow.

Anyhoo, speaking of Ninjette, I'm soliciting any questions you might have for her, some of which will be answered in an upcoming Empowered short story next week. You can leave a Ninjette query in the comments here: [link] ...or ask it via Twitter, using the hashtag #Ask Ninjette.

RANDOM ART-POST QUESTION: Whaddaya think about the "two-page spread" format I used for these two pages? Does that make you more (or less) likely to click on the image, as opposed to posting each page as a separate Deviation? Just curious, as getting people to look at B&W comic pages at all is quite the challenge; on deviantART, color illustrations rule and B&W comics pages drool, in terms of pageviews. (Can't complain about this too much, though. I'm as intensely committed to the ol' B&W as any artist on dA, yet I'm still more likely to click on a color thumbnail than a B&W one. Shiny!)

And now, the floggery: Next week, Empowered vol. 7 can be found at your Local Comics Retailer (or bookstore, possibly), or online at Dark Horse's retail website [link] or on Amazon.com [link] .

Say, here's Empowered vol. 7's cover:

And here's the book's back-cover copy:

While costumed crimefighter Empowered makes a startling discovery regarding her unfortunate status as an all-too-frequent "damsel in distress," her hard-drinking best friend Ninjette confronts her own sordid past, violent present and frighteningly uncertain future as she fights a desperate, single-handed battle against a entire clan of supernaturally durable ninja warriors. Can our two hard-luck heroines also withstand the further perils posed by supervillainous minivans, dueling sets of "daddy issues," doomed-but-still-hot boyfriends, undead karaoke party-crashers, and even "spoiler alerts from hell itself" voiced by diabolically omniscient demonspawn?

In closing, I must of course paste in the requisite general-purpose Emp-related floggery: Print copies of Empowered's first six volumes (and a pair of one-shots in comics format) can be found on the shelves of your Local Comics Retailer or bookstore, or online at Dark Horse's retail website [link] or on Amazon.com [link] . All the existing Empowered books can be purchased rather more cheaply in digital form as well, via the Dark Horse Digital store: [link]

I think the black is more okay, but it'll match more with the other black panels if said panels are THAT black... y'know?

First off, awesome work as always, and thank you for posting! Secondly, I like the two page spread honestly, I'm far more curious to click and see when you post this way.

It all depends for me. I actually prefer your work in black and white for some reason...the color covers are always a bit off-putting for me by comparison. I guess because they're comparatively rare. I like work that embraces simplicity in some way, whether it be done with black and white or with minimal detail, something that says "I don't need to use every single tool in the toolbox to get what I want".

And of course, whether color or black and white, beautiful female characters get me every time.

Re: Page Layout, More likely for me, though in the case of Emp, I tend to click anyway.

*Adds "Skrchh" and "Scrchh" to list of SFX now considered unhealthily sexy*

I'd rather read black and white art. :P If it's a comic, I'm waaaay more likely to click on B&W.
I really like this spread! I tried to embiggen it, but oops, already at fixed size!

I think this scene is great, and wish there were more like it in supers books--too often everyone's flying around performing Mighty Feats, and without a contrast like this, it sort of detracts from how awesome those Mighty Feats are. So I think these two pages are useful just on their own!

Color images are nice, but I actually prefer your B&W work. I think you're kinda wrong too :P Your B&W images get more page views than my color images. Good work is good work, yes?

Hmmmm... I think I am more likely to click on a two-page spread (although when it comes to Empowered I'm obviously going to click it regardless). They're less common than single pages, and therefore more eye-catching.

"Whaddaya think about the "two-page spread" format I used for these two pages?"

Please, Sir, I want some more!

Rilly, please don't waste anudder second of concern for preceived low View-count of B&W verses digital-color-paint-overthetop Fan Service stuff. Your penciled artwork is a delicious treat, for those of us in-the-know (all-things-Warren), and those who don't (or won't) can politely toss-off. I am so going to Wreck that Vol. 7 when I read it, multiple times, Yeah, Baby! Thank you, in advance, AW! Cheers, Roger

Great EMP no longer looses her powers when her suit gets torn as long as she believes in herself = no more bondage. MAJOR FAIL.

Looks like there isnt much reason to pick this book up anymore. Way to ignore the fanbase that made this book popular in the first place.

Can't wait to grab the new book. I'm betting that Ninjette's point has something to do with the fact that Emp's suit is currently ripped. Maybe along the lines as she's not as helpless as she thinks she is.

I like the contrast between 'Jette's furious activity and Emp's passivity. Which kinda mirrors their personalities. And I expect I'm going to like 'Jette's upcoming point.

And, you think B&W drools? Try posting text here. It positively slobbers buckets.

Small spelling error in Ninjette's Japanese dialogue. It should be:
"いくぞー!”
Two slanted slashes above the third letter.

Fixed it on this jpeg, but the error will still be in the printed book. I have no explanation for the error, as I can read kana and used the correct markers during the other time that Ninjette uses the phrase in Empowered vol.7... Oh, well. Thanks for the heads-up, though.

Hi, are you able to provide such timely updates to the Dark Horse Digital editions of Empowered too?

And do you know if they plan to up the page resolution? 1024x1418 looks fine on the laptop, but when I look at your 1700x2200 dA art on an iPad 3, I wish for similar such fine detail in the story pages themselves.

I think the two page format works just fine, after all that's pretty much how the finished comic is presented.

I like the two-page spread here, simply because it contains the story better than splitting them up would. Of course, I'm viewing it on a pretty big screen here - maybe if I had been on my laptop I would have been less likely to click on it until I got back to the main PC...

Picture-wise, very nice stuff (as usual) - it's nice to have reminders like this of the contrast between Ninjette and Emp. :) Even a D-lister is still Super.

Two pages is cool, though I would dig a thin white border between them, rather than this wide black, which is distracting. Also, I dunno how many people are on laptops, where it would be harder to see the whole thing...

I'm not asking per se, but I know there's a reason they're doing this on the ground instead of on a table or something. I can't wait to read the book and find out.

Based on the background of panel 2, they don't seem to be somewhere with furniture. Likely they're trapped inside something or other, Emp has failed to get them out, and 'Jette is about to give her a lesson on proper use of resources. Add ninja sneakiness to brute force and you get more than either can do alone, annat.
