WAYWARD variant cover, final version by AdamWarren
WAYWARD variant cover, final version
The final, finished version of the variant cover I drew for the first issue of Wayward, the fine Image comic written by my bud :iconzubby: and drawn by the great Steve Cummings.

Inks by me, background kanji (of stops on the Tokyo subway lines) by Steve, and colors by :iconjohnrauch:.

Here are the B&W inks and previous roughs:

Behold, my inks for a variant cover I drew for the first issue of Wayward, the fine Image comic written by my bud :iconzubby: and drawn by the great Steve Cummings. Coincidentally, this is very likely the last piece I'll ever ink with my once-beloved Japanese "maru" pen-tips, as they've proven increasingly temperamental in terms of ink and paper-surface issues. Nowadays, I've switched over to PITT artist pens, which are far, faaaar more reliable and easy to use.

Below, my initial roughs for the cover:

My second rough for a variant cover I drew for the first issue of Wayward, the fine Image comic written by my bud :iconzubby: and drawn by the great Steve Cummings.

I would go on to combine this pose with the kanji-based background seen in the first rough:

My initial rough for a variant cover I did for the first issue of Wayward, the fine Image comic written by my bud :iconzubby: and drawn by the great Steve Cummings. The (presently meaningless) kanji in the BG, here, were "for position only" stand-ins for the final cover's kanji, which would rattle off the names of stations on Tokyo's rail lines.  (Sure beat drawing an actual subway map of the city...)

Hello, there! I'll soon be heading up to Toronto to attend FanExpo Canada on August 28-31, after missing out on the show last year. General FanExpo info here: fanexpocanada.com/

I'll be tabling somewhere in Artist's Alley for all your signing, sketching and saying-hi needs. No panels, no shenanigans, just four days of straight behind-the-table time, guaranteed! If you're missing any Empowered volumes, I should have plenty on hand, as I'm planning to sell backstock from fine local comics emporium The Beguiling at my table, as I did at TCAF a few months back. (If I recall correctly, they had a surprising stash of long out-of-print Dirty Pair: Run from the Future TPBs as well...)

I'll have a healthy supply of my 2011 sketchbook Empowered: Extra Sketchiness on hand, in case you never snagged a copy. Some images from the 28-page book:
EMPOWERED+NINJETTE hi-contrast by AdamWarren EMPOWERED's vorppy Emp by AdamWarren Ridd1e's EMPOWERED cosplay by AdamWarren

I'll also be hauling along original art of various sorts, from cheap(ish) roughs to cover art to that one giant clump of Dirty Pair vellum-based inks that no one ever wants to buy, alas. Plus, I'm almost certainly taking on some sweet commissions while I'm there, along the lines of these 2012 pieces:

Side note: A little birdie (that is, Twitter) tells me that a badass Ninjette cosplayer will be attending the show, so keep your eyes peeled for her if you're clawing through the crowded convention floor next week!

Upon a second inspection for this series to crab about sexploitation in any genre of art is flagrantly hypocritical. Showcasing copiously T and A and then pontificating about how ironic your cheesecake is is tacky. If you want to slut it up, do it, but don't excuse with characters that burp feminist drivel, like how flouncy supergirl's skirt is; or how revealing Mai Shiranui's outfit is. One is meant to cutesy and girlish, the other is blatant cheesecake for a mostly male gaming demographic.

So I was aimlessly cruising the interwebs and found myself at amazon.whatever and a thought popped-up out of the blue

"Hey dude, when was the new volume of our favorite succulent hero out "
-Spider-man???
"No you foolish flatulent fudgepacking fuckstick; I speak of the most endeared esteemed enchanting empowered kind"
-Ah thats what I thought you meant...
"sure you did"

So I searched and found it (grats on the Amazons editors favorite best of the year award btw)
-HOLY SHIT its out September first
My eyes turned so fast I got 2:ed degree burns and locked-on too the time/date in the corner
-MOTHER OF GOD I MISSED THE RELEASE!!! GOOGLE LEND ME YOUR POWERS.

It was after two frantic searches that i went back too amazon and saw the whole release date, as in Sep 1, 2015.

.....Yeah this sucks, now I have to wait a whole year or rather 297days, or 7131 hours, or 427916 minutes....
Life is cruel but I will wait, maybe my eyes will have recovered until then.

Hey, I saw Comicgirl19's review of you and thought I'd scope out your page. As advertised, gorgeous line work. Here's her review: www.youtube.com/watch?v=auh-su…;

I agree with Frank Miller when he said inking is sexy, but pencil always feels more organic and visceral to me. What kind of printer are you using to get that quality resolution?

Empowered is a great comic book series which starts out as pure farce, then adds an element of dramatic tragedy, but remains pleasant and upbeat no matter how sad things get within the story. Just like the TV show Buffy Vampire Slayer which the comic directly referenced at one point. I think I've read the first seven trade paperback volumes, the last one I read came out in 2012 I think, this website indicates 8 hasn't come out yet.

Since the series spoofs every "web fanfic fetish" trend, I'm surprised it hasn't done the "inflated girl" trope which is a favorite of mine (think Violet Beauregard). Emp's Supersuit looks like it's just asking to be inflated and popped several times as it always regenerates. I can just imagine her complaining that she looks fat as she floats away from the air in her spherical suit.

honestly, on its face, the comic just looks like a morass of ass an' titty shots, coupled with some shameless beta male finger wagging about not objectifying women and some generic girly dialogue about body issues and men who can't commit.

 On its face, I said.

Upon inspection, it seems purty self aware and, while it does indulge in cheesecake, it's got some snappy dialogue and the heroine actually is pretty damn funny at times.

I don't know: I tend to roll my eyes at the shy beauty trope; because it's so goddamn rare, to the point of unbelievability. Women are not, as a rule, oblivious to their sex appeal and honestly the so-called standards of beauty for women are not as rigorous as most women would posture. I have discussed this at length before. The dark truth of the matter is if women stopped wearing makeup and propping up their lackluster busts with wonder bras...we'd still hit on the hottest ones of the bunch. makeup is just a nuclear arms race among women.
