EMPOWERED vol. 5 now on sale!

Thu Jun 25, 2009, 8:19 PM

I’m happy to announce that EMPOWERED vol. 5, the latest installment in my ongoing “sexy superhero comedy” published by Dark Horse Comics, has finally “dropped” and is now on sale at your local comics retailer and/or bookstore! Wheeeeeee! Just thought I’d post a journal about EMP 5’s release in case anyone wanted a place to comment after reading the book... though, if you could avoid getting too SPOILERiffic about the end of the book, I’d really appreciate it.

A brief description of the volume:

After saving much of the superhero community from certain doom, costumed crimefighter “Empowered” is dismayed to find that, in the suspicious eyes of her caped colleagues, she may have gone from being merely "an easily distressed pair of training wheels for supervillains” to possibly being a closeted supervillain herself! Meanwhile, our stressed-out superheroine must overcome other challenges aplenty, ranging from gossip-prone cosmic overlords learning Too Much Information from her mother and “cosplay” dress-up disasters at work (and in bed!) to duct-tape-happy catgirls, fiery sociopaths, orbital catastrophes, and even a surprising kiss or two... Not to mention trying to survive an emotionally charged, potentially lethal confrontation with her teammate-in-name-only (and implacable nemesis) Sistah Spooky!

Here's an interview I did with Benjamin Birdie (of THE RACK webcomic fame) for Comic Book Resources, which features a goodly number of preview pages: [link] (Note that CBR gave my throwaway line about not being a "real artist" just a little more emphasis than I intended, but it's no biggeh.) And here's another recent interview: [link] ...plus, "Empowered’s Top 10 Pros and Cons of Being a Fictional Comic-Book Character": [link]

You can order EMPOWERED 5 online at Dark Horse's retail website at: [link] or at Amazon.com: [link] Keep in mind, though, that while Dark Horse's site has the book in stock, bookstores--including Amazon-- may not get it in stock for some time yet. (Comics retailers, including online sites like TFAW, often get EMPOWERED volumes well before the bookstores do.)

Note that both sites have links for ordering previous EMPOWERED volumes, as well; or, you can quite possibly find these volumes on the shelves of your friendly neighborhood comics retailer or bookstore... And if they DON’T carry the books, just ask said retailer to order 'em for you; believe me, they'd be happy to take your money. Given that I paste this paragraph into every EMPOWERED post, it’s likely that no one’s still reading this, but... Sad to say, there’s not much point in complaining to me about your local store not carrying the book; I’m well aware of the situation, but can do very little about it. You, however, can do something about it by actually ASKING your retailer to order the book for you, as I just said. As far as I’m aware, most retailers aren’t telepaths like poor Mindf**k, and can’t read your mind and discover the existence of a secret demand for EMPOWERED... but, hey, you could just speak up and tell them that, y’know! *Steps off soapbox*

Anyhoo, hope you enjoy EMPOWERED 5; presently, I"m off to work on an EMP one-shot dealie, looks like. Have a good one, and I'll talk at ya later.

So, Adam, I work at Amazon.com, one of their oh-so-sweaty warehouses, where I fulfill orders. In the past few months, I'd noticed your trades on occasion. Now, I'm one of those cynical comic-book types, the sort that sneers at traditional Marvel and outright laughs and pokes fun at golden-age DC.

Seeing your style, my eyebrows shot up, and I had to flip through a few pages of an unfortunately damaged (shrink wrap was torn) volume one. No, I didn't damage it myself!

Well, precisely one splash page and two panels later, I made up my mind to absorb all things Adam Warren. I've bought all of your Empowered series, and I still smile and chuckle through the day when I think of your characters. On the surface, Emp really looks like another T&A mag, but certain scenes (such as Thugboy, when he tells of Emp's nocturnal habits, and the Caged Demonwolf's accepted proposal to 'Jette) have truly made this story come alive for me.

You rock, Adam. Thank you so much for this amazing work, and please, please continue to create more.
Adam, I wanted to adroitly add that your amazing alliterative abilities are both awesome and artistic.
I also wanted to subtly suggest that a certain super strumpet stop being stereotyped as super steatopygous. :) (nice word btw. I had to look that one up)

And Mulligatawney? That's like a triple word score there!

I think you can tell who my favorite character is. You have amazing writing skills, and the belt is a great plus Keep it up for the 6th please!
I just read volume 5. I have to say, I picked up the first volume for the humor and the bootilisciousness (especially 'jette), but stories like "Say I Deserve This" are the reason I look forward to each new volume with great anticipation.

I also have to say that like that you and Gaimen are the only writers I know of to ever use the adjective brobdingnagian outside of hard scienece fiction, and I want Thugboy's STR: 18(100) t-shirt.
Hey, I just wanted to say that Empowered volume 5 BLEW MY !@#$ING MIND! You just keep getting better and better! I love what you did with Spookey Sistah and MindF@#ck. And The Caged Demonwolf is my favorite character just because of the dialogue. His way of speech is hilarious! Where did you get the idea for the character?
Awesome writing and art! I cant wait till the next volume...

Adam,
Man the ending to volume 5 really got to me.

I actually had to stop reading when i got to that 2 page spread of Sistah Spooky. Damn. Great volume but, man.....
Adam I really love your Titans adaptation as well as you Iron Man miniseries. Not only are you a great artist but you have awesome ideas and writing talent. Have you ever done any more writing in your titans universe?
I made several different pitches to DC re: the TITANS" SCIOSSSORS, PAPER, STONE characters, but the company wasn't interested, sad to say.
Just wanted to say love empowered. Its a great series.
