Behold, the final, colored artwork (at a luxurious 250dpi!) for an illo that will be appearing on the back cover of EMPOWERED vol. 3, the upcoming collection (due out in March 2008) of my "sexy superhero comedy" book published by Dark Horse Comics.
Line art by yours truly, fine Photoshop colors by Lee Duhig of coloring studio Guru eFX. You can see the B&W inks at [link] ; you can also behold the earlier roughs for this piece over in my "scraps" section, at [link] and [link] .
The illo references two different "cosplay" outfits from earlier EMPOWERED volumes: our heroine's "Sexy Librarian" costume from vol. 2 [link] , and her boyfriend's "Minion of Spartan 3000" uniform from vol. 1 [link] .
Previously, I've established that each of them gets seriously turned on by the other's cosplay outfit seen here... In volume 3, though, I stumble upon a glaringly obvious new wrinkle: what if they BOTH happened to wear their mutually partner-pleasing costumes AT THE SAME TIME? (I genuinely hadn't thought of this before, believe it or not.) Furthermore, what if this epic tale of complicated sexual roleplaying were narrated by the Caged Demonwolf, that stentorian perv? What if this story were possibly titled: "WHEN TITANS CLASH... AND FORNICATE"? What if, indeed!
Note that, sadly, I'm trapped in an old pop culture reference, here; while it would be more apropos and up-to-date to make Thugboy's outfit considerably more "300-y," I'm kinda stuck with the old version of the costume, which first appeared in EMPOWERED vol. 1 (and is supposed to convey a bit of the "Brad Pitt in TROY" vibe). Believe me, the supervillain T-boy used to work for, "Spartan 3000," would VERY MUCH be into the more unclothed "300" look for his henchmen.
On a mildly self-critical note, I arguably should've gone for more of a "profile" side view of the characters (as opposed to the 3/4 camera angle I wound up using), which would've made Emp's miniskirted behind no less cute, but definitely rather less overtly prominent... Oh, well. In fact, I did sleaze up some (photoreffed) roughs showing 'em both from the side, but thought that the poses looked kinda lifeless and boring.
As for EMPOWERED vol. 3 itself (due out March 12, 2008), its preordering info is now online, over at Dark Horse's retail website: [link] An Amazon page should be up before long; also, you can now preorder it from your local comics store. Wheeee!
